Using Generative AI in Your Interview Process

At Deliveroo, Generative AI (GenAI) has become a big part of how we work, and we really value candidates who know how to leverage GenAI effectively and responsibly.

We’ve put together this guide to explain our policy on using GenAI tools throughout your application and interview journey. Our goal is to make sure your experience is fair and clear, and that you get to show off your unique skills and potential in a way that feels true to how we work at Deliveroo.

How we see GenAI use

We encourage you to use GenAI tools thoughtfully, pretty much how you’d use them in a professional setting here at Deliveroo. Being open and transparent about how you use these tools is super important to us.

Where it’s encouraged:

Application materials (CVs, cover letters)

You’re welcome to use GenAI tools to polish your application materials and make them clearer, more concise, or more impactful, but the content itself needs to be genuinely yours.

Your experiences, your skills, your perspective – that’s what we really want to hear.

Take-home assessments

Unless your recruiter tells you otherwise, you’re free to use GenAI tools for take-home assignments, like coding challenges or other project tasks.

Why we do this:

We know that in many roles at Deliveroo, especially in our tech teams, GenAI tools are a regular part of getting things done. Allowing their use here helps us see how you’d really integrate these tools into your problem-solving, just like you would on a Deliveroo team.

Key: please disclose.

If you use GenAI, you must tell us which tools you used and exactly how they helped you with your solution. We’re interested in your critical thinking, how you interpret and improve on what the AI gives you, and your understanding of the core ideas. Our questions are designed to make sure you’re adding your own smart interpretation and application, not just relying on raw AI output.

Where GenAI is not permitted:

Live Interviews

Please don’t use GenAI tools during any live interview sessions – this includes virtual and in-person interviews.

Why not?

These parts of the interview are all about seeing your unassisted communication skills, how you solve problems on the fly, your critical thinking, and how you interact spontaneously. We want to understand your independent thought process and how you share your ideas and solutions in a direct conversation.

Our approach: transparency and authenticity

Our policy is built on a few core beliefs about how we work with technology and with you:

1

Transparency is super important

Being open about your GenAI use is a must. We really value honesty and expect you to be upfront about how you’ve used these technologies. If GenAI use isn’t disclosed when it’s required, this can impact your candidacy.

2

Be your authentic self

We’re looking for your unique skills, experiences, and how you think. GenAI is a fantastic helper, but it shouldn’t replace your own work or original ideas.

Looking ahead: the future of AI in our interviews

At Deliveroo, we see GenAI as a tool that amplifies what people can achieve. While our current policy does not permit the use of these tools in live interviews, we are actively exploring new formats for live coding interviews where candidates can feature and demonstrate their ability to use AI tools to enhance their problem-solving skills. More to follow!
